Vo Hoang Yen is the first runner-up of the Miss Vietnam 2008 Contest. There has been gossip in recent days that Vo Hoang Yen was chosen to represent Vietnam at the Miss World Contest in South Africa. However, the super model asked the Elite Vietnam for a large amount of money to participate in the said Contest. Her demand was turned down and Duong Truong Thien Ly was called instead. Vo Hoang Yen denied the accusation, saying it's just gossip and speculation.

Why Vo Hoang Yen refused to attend Miss World 2008 Contest?

Vo Hoang Yen, the 1st runner-up in last year's Hoa Hau Hoan Vu Vietnam pageant, has been elected by the Hoan Vu Company to represent Vietnam at the Miss Universe 2009 pageant to take place in the Bahamas on August 23rd. The 21-year old model and student from Ho Chi Minh City stands 1.79 m in height.

A controversy made headlines when the Ministry of Culture passed a regulation that allowed only one major pageant a year in Vietnam. This year, the license was given to the Mrs. Vietnam contest.

Pageant officials tried to appeal this decision, stating that Mrs. contests could not be compared with Miss contests, but no agreement was reached.
